Average is just another word for Mediocre…
Back in the last Millennium, when we had Fax machines and Yellow Pages directories…
We ran a successful Recruitment Agency – we had formed the agency to supply our Logistics company with drivers, warehouse staff and administrators…
As we built our reputation for being a bit different, we started to get enquiries from our clients for staff too.
We were asked to find an Operations Manager for a manufacturing company in Witton, Birmingham – in the shadow of the AVFC football ground.
So we placed an advert in Thursday’s “Evening Mail” showing a salary of £25,000 plus car, pension and 35 days holiday.
Over the weekend we received around 80 applications, from which we selected 5 to submit to our client, who in turn chose three for interview. A job was offered and accepted by one of the candidates and during the debrief our client requested another similar candidate for a different division f his business – same location and job spec, just a different product line…
So we ran the same advert a couple of weeks later, however, the Mail made a typo and instead of the salary being £25,000 it was published at £250,000…
We waited for the 000’s of applications to come in for the new salary level.
Within a week we had received a total of ZERO applications.
We did get a few ‘phone calls checking on the job but no one applied – those we spoke to we explained the error and apologised, but asked why they hadn’t applied anyway….
If it was £250k salary, I didn’t think I’d qualify…
Was the average response.
Too many people shoot for average and achieve it, rather than aiming for awesome and getting that instead – the beauty of aiming high is that not many people do, so you’ll be on a shortlist to start with and the chances of success are stacked in your favour.
In business and life, I’ve had numerous instances where I’ve dared to ask for amazing rather than average and been rewarded with opportunities and relationships I could have otherwise decided were out of my league.
Your league is whatever you choose it to be, the higher you choose to aim, the bigger the target, the less people are shooting at it.
Aim high – you never know, you might be the only one that does…
Have a great week…
Best Regards
David
